French Island, located approximately 70 kilometres from Melbourne, is a unique and pristine destination with untouched natural beauty and a serene island lifestyle. Spanning an area almost twice the size of its neighbouring Phillip Island, French Island boasts a remarkable 70% National Park coverage, offering expansive landscapes teeming with native flora and fauna. With only around 120 fortunate permanent residents, makes it one of Victoria's best-kept secrets. French Island’s small community enjoys the amenities of a single general store with fuel, Landcare and a local CFA. The island is also home to a very small public primary school, cricket team and a cemetery that holds historical significance for the island’s families. The island is further enriched by an award-winning winery and several charming accommodation businesses that cater to tourists seeking a peaceful retreat.
Governance
As an unincorporated area, French Island has the added advantage of being free from local council governance, which means residents do not pay council rates—a rare benefit in today's world. Instead, The French Island Community Association (FICA) represent the community.
FICA is made up of a dedicated committee of 10 volunteers who play an essential role in supporting the island’s residents by managing its critical infrastructure, including key services like the local tip and liaising with governmental departments. Their commitment helps ensure that the community's unique needs are met, fostering a sustainable and well-organized island environment.
FICA relies on membership revenue from French Island residents and land-owners to assist with costs of maintaining the local tip etc. Family memberships are under $200 per year and for singles it's less than $100.

In consultation with the community, The French Island Community Association developed a Vision Statement to help provide clarity amongst current and future landowners and residents.

What truly sets French Island apart is its thriving wildlife, including thousands of healthy koalas that roam freely, providing a rare opportunity to experience some of Australia's native animals and birds in their natural habitat.
Visitors and residents alike can enjoy the abundance of fresh air, wide-open spaces, and the tranquillity that comes with island living, far removed from the hustle and bustle of urban life.
Additionally, the island is fully off-grid, so homes and properties are powered independently, eliminating the need for traditional power bills.
